Ask a Finnish Teacher

Introduction

27/3/2018

I teach Finnish to adults in Helsinki. For the most part, I speak to my students in Finnish. Even the beginners.

In my day to day life, I get asked so many questions that I don't really get to answer, and I'm sure that there are many questions that simply don't get asked.

I've created this blog to  make it easier to ask, and to make it easier to answer. I've decided to write this blog in English, but you can write to me in French, Spanish, Swedish, Estonian and of course in Finnish.

Is Finnish really that hard to learn? I'm in the learning process at the moment and I know I've a long, long way to go I feel that I'm getting to grips with it. There is a lot to learn, but difficult? There are some things I really love about it, vowel harmony, how once you get the knack of how letters and combinations of letters are pronounced they're the same regardless of where they are in the word. Something English is terrible for. It was tough going through Slough? :-D

Slough going indeed :D

There's absolutely a lot to learn, but in my experience it's not quite as difficult as people often think.

It's actually quite a big deal that Finnish is written almost exactly as it's pronounced - advanced learners and native speakers don't tend to have any trouble at all with spelling once they know the words. I went to school in English and have been writing in English daily ever since, and I still have to check how to spell which (or is it witch? wich?) every now and again.

I'm a native English speaker and I'm often having to check my spelling. Ironically I find myself asking my wife, who's a native speaking Finn! :-D
